A play by Willy Russell Essay Blood Brothers, a play by Willy Russell, was set in the late sixties/early seventies and was written in 1981. It is a Liverpudlian West Side Story about twin brothers being separated at birth because their mother cannot afford to keep them. She gives one of them away to a wealthy woman who longs for a child. The two children grow up as friends in very different environments, not bothered about the old tale about a curse that states that if twins are separated at birth, they will die if brought back together during their lives. But a quarrel between the two boys soon brings trouble. Russell uses the play, including the scene that I am going to be focusing on, to put across views about 20th century society and to show the importance of class and life in Liverpool in the late sixties and early seventies. He also highlights the importance of environment and the way society, at the time, regarded single mothers. Single mothers were thought of as lower class characters that have many children born of different fathers. At the time that Blood Brothers was set, politics wouldve been really bad. The government probably wouldnt have cared or been bothered about the poor living conditions that some of the weaker families were living in. This wouldve had a large effect on those weaker families, such as the Johnstones, because of lack of money due to Mrs Johnstones low paid job. Weaker families in the sixties wouldve probably struggled to buy even the small amount of necessaries that they need in order to survive. The scene that I have chosen to focus on is when Mrs Lyons persuades Mrs Johnstone to give her one of her babies when they are born. There are two very different social classes shown in this scene in particular because of the way the characters look, speak and the environment that they are in, which is Mrs Lyons home. When the two characters are talking to each other in this scene, we can tell that they are different not only by the way the talk but by the way they act, their body language and most importantly, the way they are dressed. On a whole, the play shows the differences between the social classes really well because of the differences between Mrs Lyons and Mrs Johnstone, and also the differences between Mickey, Mrs Johnstones son, and Eddie, Mrs Lyons son. In the scene that I have chosen, the differences between the two social classes are clearly identified. Mrs Lyons is a middle class character whereas Mrs Johnstone is a working class character. Mrs Johnstone works for Mrs Lyons in a low paid job, resulting in small, cramped living conditions for her family and herself. Mrs Lyons, however, lives in a much larger house. The two characters speak very differently as well. Mrs Lyons speaks standard English with no swearing and no slang words, but Mrs Johnstone has a strong Liverpudlian accent and would most probably use a lot of swearing and slang words when she speaks. Mrs Lyons would be very smartly dressed with lots of expensive jewellery, but Mrs Johnstone would be poorly dressed, most probably wearing a cleaning apron while she is working. The only jewellery she would be wearing would be something like a cross to symbolise her religion and her superstition. These differences all show the differences between the two social classes. Mrs Johnstone and Mrs Lyons play very different roles in the play. Mrs Johnstone plays the role of a single mother with six or seven children. She is struggling to pay off her debts with people such as the catalogue man due to her low paid job. She is a poor woman and probably lives in an unfriendly environment. Her children will not have been brought up very well due to lack of money and possible lack of education. Mrs Lyons, however, is a very different character. Steinbeck draws on this form of genre to present the idea that we are all a part of what happens to others, based upon our nature. The image presented of Tularecito is that of a demon, an idiot savant, a boy with a gift from God, and that gift's cost. He is a freak, a dangerous misfit, an innocent who does not need the constraints of reality. Tularecito is a test. The test is one of moral caliber. It is a test of the souls of the characters who overshadaow Tularecito. Pancho is a man that is both holy and sinful. His purfunctory act of church going becomes true belief as alcohol demons induce him to halucinate a deformed boy into an outcast from hell. He looks into his mirror and sees himself, becomes shaken, reforms. From Pancho's employer, Franklin Gomez, we get a cold hard look into society. We see a mother, knowing her son is to be hated and feared, and perhaps possibly killed, cannot face killing her son with her bare hands. She leaves the killing to exposure to the elements, enying herself a look into Tularecito. Franklin adopts Pancho's demon, and Tularecito transforms into a disadvantaged who has been gifted with talent. Tularecito becomes a man at the age of six, "The boy grew rapidly, but after the fifth year his brain did not grow any more," To Franklin, Tularecito is grace, and graceless. He is talented in all things of any physical strength, and well proficient in the creation of beauty, and an artist in the care for life of nature. This leads a third view of Tularecito, one of a simple minded killer that needs to be locked up for his own good. Tularecito is viewed as less than human from the start. His name means "little frog", and his physical disabilities are seen by all, causing fear. Tularecito is a noble savage. As Steinbeck weaves his tale, it is obviously full of metaphors on the basic belief of our society that everything must be forced into a plausable category, fit for inclusion into the human race. Tularecito should never have gone to school. He would have been happy living at home, simple as he was. In the end society takes Tularecito and makes him a monster. Since monsters are not allowed into human society, Tularecito goes looking for a different society that he does belong to. Unfortunately this society doen not exist. Tularecito has no control over his perceptions of reality and fantasy. He searches for a world of fantasy, and in his efforts, he creates a hole. When this hole is covered up, it confirms Tularecito's belief in fantasy. Tularecito creates another hole, and waits for his fantasy to show. Tularecito has only one flaw. He believes that what he created should not be destroyed. Whenever this happens, should it be school, work, or fantasy, Tularecito defends his creations with the only thing he can understand, violence. It is not like true, calculated violence, but very much like a motor nerve reaction. He reacts with pure emotion and pain, and eventually he kills. Steinbeck tells an interesting story with Tularecito as a mirror. In fact, all the characters in the story are mirrors. As we look at them we see how we measure against them. During this time period, Texas became a region of American settlement. During this time period, three different groups of people lived in this region. These groups included the Cherokee Indians, Mexicans, and European settlers. Before times of conflict, these three ethnic groups coexisted on the land in peace. However, the Mexican-American War of 1836 changed the region of Texas. After the war, the American settlers pushed for the removal of the Mexicans and Cherokee Indians off the land through the use of force and deceit. One of the groups of people to endure the price of discrimination, violence, and hatred, just to become American citizens, were the Mexican-Americans. The lives of the Tejanos, or Texas Mexicans, were abused and disgraced religiously, economically, politically, and morally due to the prejudices of the southern states and the Mexican War. The name itself, Mexican-Americans, defines these people as citizens of the United States who can trace their ancestry or history back to Mexico. In the nineteenth century, a dominant characteristic of the Mexican-Americans was their cherished Roman Catholic faith. During the Texas Revolution, Texan rebels knew that one way to infuriate the Tejanos was to destroy their places of worship. In the book, Adah goes back in forth between her two â€Å"men† or beliefs; she either believes in science, or God. Adah is also overlooked when the fire ants attacked their village; her own mother felt her behind (306).Orleanna did not favor Adah, causing her to be a â€Å"minor† member in the family. The youngest and most innocent of the Price children is Ruth May. She is given the name of Bandu in the kikongo language, meaning â€Å"the reason for everything† and â€Å"the littlest one on the bottom. † Orleanna (the mother) values Ruth May the most of her four children. All of Orleanna’s narratives are meant for Ruth May. In the Bible, Ruth is a cha racter who helped soldiers when they needed it, she was a friend. The translation of the word Ruth in Hebrew means â€Å"companion† (â€Å"Origin and Meaning of Baby Names†).The word ruth in English, mean grief; for Orleanna, she felt much grief when Ruth May died. An entire book of the Bible describes Ruth, and an entire character dedicates what she says to Ruth May. The Kikongo word â€Å"nommo† is â€Å"the force that makes things live as what they are† (209); it is â€Å"a song, a poem, a scream, a prayer, a name†(210). It refers to the belief that naming something gives it its nature – a man is a man because that is what he is named, whereas a rabbit is not a man because that is not what he is named. Nommo says you do not have a life until you are named; your name makes you who you are.Would Rachel Price be less vain and beautiful if her name were not Rachel Rebekkah? Nommo says, yes, she would be a different person. Kingslover’s approach to identifying the characters in The Poisonwood Bible, maintains the focus on who each person is and who they are meant to be. The names give us hints as to what each person’s personality will be. Also, the names can allude to biblical references that help define what the character’s relationships with others are.
